Abstract
To build a system with ideal ease of maintenance, operation, and assembly, it is desirable to employ a packaging method1,2 that connects boards without a cable. However, no such photonic switching system had been developed, and no methodology for achieving such a system had been proposed. NEC has succeeded in securing optical connections between boards without using optical fiber cables by implementing a newly developed optical connector,3 which is the key device for a multistage space-division photonic switching system.
