Abstract
The next generation of local area networks will operate at transmission rates >1 Gbit/sec. These networks will cover large distances to act as metropolitan area networks1 and high-speed backbones. Applications for computer supported cooperative work2 require large bandwidths if based on real-time voice and video exchange. Some international standards such as IEEE 802.6 DQDB are already specified for interconnection of networks.
