Abstract

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) promise to provide wafer-scale manufacturable and testable devices capable of coupling milliwatts of single frequency power into single-mode optical fibers and tens of milliwatts into multimode fibers.1 The apparent ease of coupling and overall packaging simplicity suggests relatively inex-pensive pigtailed components. The geometry also is compatible with 2-D arrays of optical outputs, which may be useful in photonic switching and computing applications.2
