Clipping distortion in subcarrier- multiplexed CATV systems

Abstract

The transmission of analog television signals requires extreme fidelity, which has led to AM subcarrier multiplexed schemes utilizing highly linear laser diodes. Since N carriers are simultaneously impressed on a biased laser diode, clipping can occur when the sum of all N modulating currents exceeds the laser bias. The competing desires for large N and no clipping distortion must be balanced, and some clipping must be tolerated to maximize overall system performance.
