Abstract

Saleh1 calculated the channel capacity of amplitude modulated subcarrier multiplexed (AM SCM) systems by considering the threshold nonlinearity of the laser diode as the fundamental limit and by assuming that all the threshold nonlinear distortion (NLD) comes back into the signal bandwidth as noise. This provides an overestimate of the NLD and consequently an under-estimate of the resulting channel capacity. Recently, Alameh and Minasian2 reported NLD calculations ~10 dB lower than Saleh’s result. Furthermore, for channel capacity calculation Refs. 1-3 treat the NLD as additional noise that degrades the carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the system. We believe that a more appropriate approach is to determine the effect of the NLD on the composite-second-order (CSO) and composite- triple-beat (CTB) levels. In this paper we report: (1) experimental measurements of the NLD that are in good agreement with recent analysis2 and simulation3 results, and (2) calculation of the number channels limited by the laser diode threshold nonlinearity based on the CSO and CTB requirements.
