Abstract
The use of optical amplifiers greatly enhances the viability of high capacity optical transmission over long link lengths and offers the possibility of achieving a repeaterless information-transparent network. In recent years laboratories worldwide have reported the use of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), to give a significant improvement in receiver sensitivity.1–3 In this paper we report transmission system experiments in which an EDFA has been used as a preamplifier to achieve receiver sensitivities of −38.1 dBm (242 photons/bit) at 5 Gbit/s and −33.8 dBm (325 photons/bit) at 10 Gbit/s.
