Abstract
For more than two decades, organic materials have been investigated for their potential usefulness in nonlinear optics (NLO) due to their large nonlinear coefficients and fast response time.1 Here, we report on the measurement of the resonant nonlinear index of refraction for the crystalline organic compound, 3, 4, 9, 10 perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). This effect is associated with free carriers (plasma) generated by dissociated excitons in PTCDA rib waveguides. To our knowledge, this is the first observation of light- generated plasma effects in organic crystals.
