Abstract

Optical fiber couplers are important devices, both for optical fiber communication systems and fiber-optic sensors. During the fabrication of optical fiber couplers with the fusion elongation method, the splitting ratio should be monitored in order to obtain optical fiber couplers with a desired splitting ratio. In a conventional monitoring method, optical power from two output ends is monitored. In this method, more than two fiber connections are necessary as a preparation, and these connections cause measurement error because of connection loss fluctuation (a typical standard deviation is 0.03 dB).
