Abstract

Optical couplers with wavelength-flattened coupling ratios1,2 will play an important role in optical communication systems in which various wavelengths are used.3 We previously proposed a new configuration: a WINC (wavelength insensitive coupler).2 From the practical point of view, integration and packaging remain to be solved. To achieve multiple circuit integration, the fabrication of uniform couplers and multiple fiber-to-waveguide connection must be studied. This paper reports the fabrication and characteristics of four wavelength insensitive couplers integrated in parallel on a Si substrate and also describes both fiber connection and a thermal cycling test.
