Abstract

Optical spectrum analyzers with an optical-fiber interface have been required since optical fibers have become common. Optical spectrum analyzers for a wide wavelength range can be provided by using diffraction gratings. However, diffraction gratings have strong polarization dependence; that is, the diffraction efficiencies for the s- and p-polarizations are different. Therefore, a spectrum analyzer to which a diffraction grating is simply applied will not measure a correct optical spectrum with adequate stability within the measuring time when it is used with a single-mode optical fiber, which cannot maintain the polarization of light.
