Abstract
Polarization-maintaining fibers1 (PMF) are an obvious solution to the polarization problem. In coherent trunk systems their loss must be very close to that of standard fiber, and in subscriber systems a good extinction ratio must be maintained even through many cascaded PMF couplers.
