Abstract
Polarization disperson in single-mode fibers has been a steadily developing subject since the introduction of the so-called principal states of polarization.1 It has been shown experimentally2 that the problem is fully under control in a statistical sense: for N cascaded fibers, the average differential group delay (DGD), τ, grows as N1/2 and has a Maxwell distribution with a standard deviation σ calculated from the rms value of the data measured on individual fibers.
