Abstract

The current status and future trends in optical fiber performance and fabrication technology are dictated by fundamental materials properties, waveguide propagation characteristics, and processing limitations. The major trends in fabrication of optical fibers include fewer fiber measurements, increased fiber draw speeds, larger preforms, and two-step preform fabrication processes.
