Abstract
Very high-speed lightwave transmission systems will play an important role in the future bradband communications network. A 2.5-Gb/s fiber system based on synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) is presently a commercial reality, and the next SDH hierarchy at 10 Gb/s is under development in laboratories worldwide. The inital applications for these high-speed systems over 10 Gb/s will probably be in fiber backbones between central offices and eventually perhaps in high-capacity ring network or broadcast distribution of high-definition television (HDTV).
