Abstract

The structural parameters of a single fiber connector ferrule, such as fiber guide-hole eccentricity, outer diameter, and fiber guide-hole diameter, are very important parameters that affect the splice loss. There have been no means of measuring those structural parameters automatically at the same time. Additionally, the repeatability (standard deviation) for fiber guide-hole eccentricity is about 0.2 μm by the conventional method, which uses a simple mechanism to rotate a test ferrule about the fiber hole and to measure the position of the outer surface. Here, we present a newly developed measuring system, which is capable of automatically and accurately measuring those structural parameters at the same time within 90 s.
