Abstract

Since the advent of fiber optics, there have been applications for optical switches. The lack of reliable, low loss optical switches has forced the system designer to make an O/E conversion and use electronic means to switch or avoid switching altogether. Relatively complex and expensive optical switches have been used in cases where optical switches are vital, as in the case of the recently deployed TAT-8 undersea cable.1
