Abstract
Optical time domain reflectometry has now been developed to such an extent that it is difficult to achieve major performance enhancements by traditional methods, i.e., through an increase of transmitter launch power, a decrease in receiver noise level, or more sophisticated signal processing. We demonstrate that by employing semiconductor laser pumped fiber amplifiers, the OTDR measurement range can be increased substantially for all pulse widths (resolutions) of interest. For long distance applications Raman gain in the fiber under test is employed, while for high resolution measurements erbium fiber amplification is incorporated in the OTDR equipment.
