Abstract
An analog transmission of microwave signals through optical fibers offers a new method for transmission over a limited distance. Several links using direct modulation of a laser diode and a direct detection scheme have been demonstrated to date.1,2 Direct modulation of a laser diode causes major problems, such as frequency chirping and bandwidth limitation. A LiNbO3 modulator has potentially no chirping and a larger bandwidth. Compared with a direct detection scheme, a homodyne detection scheme has the advantage of higher sensitivity. This paper reports a novel fiber optic link operating at 17-GHz band featured by the efficient LiNbCb resonant type modulator and self-homodyne scheme.
