Abstract

In principle fluoride optical fibers offer transmission losses as low as 0.01 dB/km at the optimum transmission wavelength near the 2.5-μm region.1 To date, a minimum loss of 0.7 dB/km has been reported for multimode fluoride fiber.2 A number of laboratories are currently assessing the feasibility of ultralong span transmission systems employing multimode fluoride optical fiber several tens of meters in length.3–5
