Laser-switched wideband fiber optic delay network for phased array antenna steering

Abstract

Fiber optic delay lines offer a lightweight compact solution to accomplish broadband true-time-delay steering of phased array antennas. By using a lightwave as a carrier for the microwave signals that drive the radiation elements of a phased array antenna, a delay network that is nondispersive over multibands of microwave frequencies can be made. We report a first demonstration of the concept with 3-bit fiber optic delay networks designed to steer a phased array antenna at 2 and 9 GHz.
