Abstract
Optical fiber distribution provides an ideal complementary delivery system to the over-the-air broadcast of HDTV. Because video in digital form will necessarily be present inside of every airwaves-ready HDTV set, reaching these already digitized sets with digital optical fiber may well turn out to be the most cost-effective wired delivery solution. When we build the new fiber optic network to meet the full bandwidth and performance requirements of HDTV, we should recognize this as the golden opportunity to invest in a true multifunctional communications infrastructure with capabilities extending far beyond single purpose distribution.
