Abstract

Recently it has been shown that multielectrode DFB lasers are an attractive alternative to monolithically integrated DFB waveguides and DBR lasers for use as transmitters and local oscillators in coherent optical communication systems due to their ease of fabrication and excellent FM characteristics.1 We report here on a novel multielectrode 1.55-μm DFB laser with an interdigitated p-contact. Superior single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) operation has been observed with this device, which has a continuous tuning range of over 20 A and a flat FM response.
