Abstract
Increasing bit rates and the potential of using coherent detection techniques in advanced optical fiber systems lead to the need to use optical isolation to minimize noise generated in lasers. To avoid the need for increased laser package size, and consequently redesign and testing of hermetic packages, external isolators offer some advantages.
