Abstract

The antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (ARROW)1-3 is a single-mode optical waveguide which utilizes a pair of thin interference claddings between the core and semiconductor substrate. This waveguide is promising for integrated optics because of many features. Polarization and wavelength selective characteristics are two of them. However, these are not always useful for all applications. We propose a novel polarization-insensitive ARROW-B as shown in Fig. 1, which has a similar structure and propagation characteristics to ARROW. The propagation characteristics are analyzed, and low-loss propagation for both TE and TM modes is demonstrated.
