Abstract

A broadly tunable single-frequency external-cavity laser is demonstrated by coupling a tunable fiber-optic evanescent-grating reflective filter1,2 to an AR-coated semiconductor laser. Tunable external-fiber-cavity lasers have recently been demonstrated,3,4 but single-frequency operation was not observed due either to weak feedback3 or excessively large cavity lengths.4 For the laser presented in this paper, enhanced tuning range and single-frequency operation are achieved by using a high reflectivity filter (>80%) and a relatively small cavity length (≃8 cm).
