Abstract
On 12 Nov. 1986 Southern Bell began its first all-fiber loop project at Hunters Creek, a planned unit community south of Orlando, FI. This project consists of a multimode-based CATV distribution transport system operating at 45 Mbit/s providing two simultaneous TV signals to each residence. The system’s electronics were designed and manufactured by AT&T Technologies. The thirty-six available CATV channels are transported from the CATV company-provided head-end over single-mode fiber to a video switch located within Hunters Creek. From the video switch two multimode fibers extend to each of 250 living units. Each of the CATV subscribers can send a 1200-baud signal from the residence to the video switch to perform TV signal changes. There are presently over 100 subscribers receiving video service over the system. Focus group discussions with existing subscribers have indicated a high degree of customer satisfaction with this CATV system, particularly noting the video Image clarity and consistency. Maintenance experience to date has resulted in a very acceptable trouble history.
