Long-length and high-strength dual-shaped core dispersion-shifted fibers made by a fully synthesized VAD method

Abstract

Dispersion-shifted fibers (DSFs) are required for long-haul and high-bit-rate telecommunication systems. For use in submarine cables, both high optical and mechanical reliabilities are imperative. Essential properties of submarine cables are long length, high strength, and low transmission loss. Optical characteristics such as splice loss, bend loss, transmission loss, chromatic dispersion, and mode field diameter have already been investigated for several kinds of index profile to find a better operating point. It has been reported that dual-shaped core DSFs have advantages in bend loss characteristics without an additional splice loss increase.1,2
