Abstract
It is important to evaluate the bending loss characteristics of single-mode fibers from the viewpoint of suppression of the loss increase in cabling and installation. But it is not easy to evaluate the bending loss based on the fiber parameters such as mode field diameters and cutoff wavelengths because the relationship between the loss and these two parameters strongly depends on the refractive-index profiles. Recently, the newly defined mode field diameter was suggested to represent the bending sensitivity.1 Thus this parameter seems excellent on the point of bending evaluation.
