Abstract
A record high coupled power of over 100 μW into a single-mode fiber has been obtained in a newly developed InGaAsP edge-emitting LED (E-LED) at a level of current as low as 50 mA. A fall time of <2.0 ns was achieved without prebiasing. These high performances are suitable for many short- to medium- distance optical transmission systems using single-mode fibers (SMFs). Compared with diode lasers, the E-LEDs offer higher reliability, immunity to optical feedback noise, and lower cost as a result of the simplified electronic circuitry.
