Abstract

Conventional single-mode fibers do not preserve the state of polarization (SOP) of the transmitted optical signal. Polarization diversity can be used in an optical coherent receiver1 to avoid loss of signal due to mismatch between the SOP of the received signal field and local oscillator field. Glance has analyzed a DPSK polarization diversity receiver employing square-law rectifiers2 and calculated a small power penalty of 0.4 dB relative to ideal polarization control.
