Polarization-insensitive coherent receiver using a double-balanced optical hybrid system

Abstract

It is well known that in coherent lightwave communication the states of polarization between the received signal wave and local oscillator wave have to be well matched. For most laboratory system experiments, this polarization alignment has been achieved with manually controlled polarization compensators. For coherent systems to be really practical, the implementation of a polarization-insensitive receiver is crucial.
