Abstract

Phase-diversity optical receivers1,2 may offer significant advantages for coherent transmission compared with single-branch receivers when laser phase noise is present. In particular, the sensitivity penalty due to phase noise remains small, even when the linewidth is of the same order of magnitude as the bit rate, which makes the scheme useful for coherent optical transmission using semiconductor lasers. However, most of the experimental work reported so far has been done with narrow-linewidth lasers.
