Abstract
Ultrahigh-speed photonic components are necessary to exploit the wide bandwidth available when using a lightwave as the carrier frequency for telecommunication and instrumentation applications. Two classes of component are addressed: on the transmitter end, the modulator to impress the electrical signal onto the lightwave carrier and, on the receiver end, the photodiode to reproduce faithfully the electrical signal.
