Optical switching architectures

Abstract

Photonic switching systems can be divided into three categories1: time division; space division; and wavelength division. There are many architectural proposals for the photonic switching systems, but space division (SD) systems are the most promising given the current state-of-the-art technology. Switching devices for the photonic SD system can be said to be the most mature among the technologies needed for these three switching systems.
