Crosstalk in a Two-Channel Coherent Fiber Optic ASK System Using an Optical Amplifier and Non-Negligible Linewidth Lasers

Abstract

Future multichannel coherent fiber optic systems will most likely employ optical amplifiers as repeaters and/or signal boosters.1 Such systems will experience an additional crosstalk due to the amplifiers and will therefore need increased channel spacing compared to non-amplifier multichannel systems. Also, in low or medium bit rate applications, the coherent system would probably experience a penalty due to the non-negligible linewidths of the source and local oscillator (LO) lasers.2 This paper presents an experimental study of the crosstalk and channel spacing in a 150 Mb/s two-channel ASK system using a semiconductor laser amplifier and 1.55 μm DCPBH-DFB lasers.
