Abstract
Wavelength multiplexed fiberoptic networks and communication systems require tunable narrowband optical filters that are compatible with single-mode waveguides. In systems where non polarization preserving fibers are used it is essential that the filters operate ; independently of the input polarization. In this paper we propose and demonstrate a novel polarization independent optical filter with single-mode LiNbO3 strip waveguides. The filter has a bandwidth of 12 Å and is electro-optically tunable over at least 110 Å. Two complementary output ports allow operation as a bandpass and as a notch filter.
