Abstract
As the demand for broadband services increases, there is need for broadband switching systems. An optical space-division switching system has advantages for use in exchanging broadband signals. The bit-rate independence of optical switches enables the system to exchange various speed signals up to 1-Gb/s high-definition TV signals. This paper describes a study of a small-capacity optical space-division switching system using LiNbO3 directional coupler optical switch matrices, which will provide broadband service capabilities both in private networks and in future broadband ISDNs.
