Optical fiber up-tapers at 1.3 μm for self-aligned beam expansion and single-mode hardware

Abstract

Single-mode optical fiber tapers have been shown1,2 to greatly improve the axial and transversal displacement tolerances and reduce the dust sensitivity of single-mode fibers, thus making them useful in a variety of Interconnection and component applications. A typical taper, shown in Fig. 1, has a standard single-mode fiber geometry at one end and gradually increases in cross section so that the size of the core at the other end is of the order of 100 μm. This effectively enlarges the dimension of the dominant-mode beam in an aberration-free and self-aligning manner.
