Abstract

Extensive research has been directed toward development of fiber-optic sensors mainly based on phase modulation. For applications such as phase sensors, phase modulators are useful for optimizing sensor performance. We have made an integrated phase modulator by coating single-mode fibers with a vinylidene fluoride-tetrafluoroethylene (PVF2-TFE) copolymer radially poled. The phase sensitivity of the fiber has been studied both analytically and experimentally in the wide range from 1 kHz to 350 MHz.
