Low-loss fusion splicing of PCVD-DFSM fibers

Abstract

Recently1 we have shown that the reproducible preparation of dispersion flattened SM fibers is possible by means of the low-pressure PCVD process.2,3 However, the spot size of this type of fiber is only ~6.5 μm (1300 nm) to 7.5 μm (1550 nm). Such small spot sizes are expected to cause problems when fibers are spliced. In addition, the relatively complex refractive-index profiles might be deformed during the fusion splicing process. We, therefore, investigated the splice performance of DFSM fibers using commercially available splicing equipment.
