Dispersion-shifted fibers with Gaussian-step profile

Abstract

A long-haul high-bit-rate transmission system requires low-loss optical fibers with good dispersion characteristics. Several candidates for dispersion-shifted single-mode (DS-SM) fibers for 1.55 pm which have a single-peak profile, e.g., step-index, triangular, Gaussian,3 etc., were studied, but it was not easy to obtain a large mode-field diameter (MFD) (for low-loss splicing) with a low bending sensitivity (for low-loss cabling). To enlarge the MFD of DS-SM as the bending resistance is kept low, two-step profiles' and segmented core types2 have been proposed.
