Abstract
As fiber and cable prices decline, it is essential that supplier manufacturing costs and user installation costs also be reduced. Because of enhanced fiber specifications, measurements are a significant portion of such costs. This tutorial traces the characterization history of multimode and single-mode fiber in nonlaboratory environments from before drawing until after installation. Mechanical and optical properties and approaches of several suppliers and users are covered.
