Minitutorial: Integrated optics

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Integrated optics is the field of photonics dealing with the design, fabrication, and applications of monolithic optical-guided-wave devices and circuits. This tutorial reviews the operational principles and characteristics of basic passive and active components (e.g., bends, couplers, and modulators) and the design of multicomponent circuits, circuit fabrication technology, and applications in areas such as telecommunications, sensing, and signal processing. Devices formed in LiNbO3 III-V semiconductors and glass are discussed.
