Theory of light emitting diode to single-mode fiber coupling

Abstract

For coupling of coherent sources such as laser diodes to single-mode fibers, a powerful theoretical formalism has been developed, which permits rather exact calculation of the coupling efficiency, even considering imperfections and misalignment of the coupling optics.1 However, no theory has yet been published for partially coherent sources such as edge emitting LEDs (ELEDs), The measured coupled power for different ELED types and coupling optics varies between 5 and 250 μW.2 For optimization of ELED structures and coupling lenses a formalism similar to that for coherent sources seems to be quite useful.
