Abstract

Last year, AT&T began production and installation of a new single-mode lightguide cable designated Lightpack cable.1 The design is unique in that multiple units are packaged within a single large-diameter filled tube rather than In individual tubes. Each unit is identified with a color coded binder. This concept allows for extremely compact and lightweight cables which greatly facilitate installation and splicing. The basic Lightpack construction is illustrated in Fig. 1(a). The cable is completed with the application of a steel-reinforced high-density polyethylene sheath.2 The sheath has a 600-lb load rating and also provides excellent mechanical protection against impact, crush, and abrasion.
