Abstract

For many years research has gone on to beat the 1.55-μm chromatic dispersion of long-haul high-bit-rate single-mode fiber links and hence to improve their transmission capacity. Recent work has shown the possibility of achieving very- high-performance transmission experiments where more than 1-Gbit/s bit rates together with spans of at least 100 km1,2 or bit rates of <500 Mbit/s over distances >200 km3,4 are demonstrated.
