Abstract

The anticipated large use of polarization-maintaining single-mode fibers (PMFs) in coherent communication systems and sensors will shortly pose the problem of characterization. standardization. and measurements of transmission parameters. While for some of these parameters a comparatively simple extension from conventional fibers is sufficient. the mode-field diameter (MFD) needs particular investigation, because, in general, the field In PMFs is not circularly symmetric.
