Abstract
This paper will review the current status of the modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) process, both in terms of results from large scale manufacture of multimode and single-mode fiber as well as research and development results. The flexibility and controllability of the MCVD process in conjunction with excellent understanding of the physics and chemistry have not only allowed economic manufacture of high-quality fiber but have also been utilized to investigate fibers for new and advanced applications.
