Abstract
The combination of low-cost and reliable LED light sources with large-capacity single-mode fibers appears to be very attractive for the local exchange and subscriber loop networks. This approach allows the installation of single-mode systems at relatively low cost for repeaterless short-haul applications with presently available technology. However, the wide LED spectrum results in appreciable chromatic dispersion penalties even when operating near the zero-fiber dispersion wavelength,1 especially for bit rates in excess of 140 Mbit/s.
