Abstract

Polished directional couplers are key single-mode optical components which have found many applications.1,2 Furthermore, access to the exposed mode field in half-couplers makes possible a wide range of active fiber-based components. It is crucial to determine the fundamental properties of these components, and this paper reports both the amplitude and phase characterization of polished half-couplers in the presence of variable-index overlays.
